Start with applications and hardware
List essential software, document formats, meeting tools, VPNs, printers, docks, audio devices, graphics requirements, and games. Test a live environment for Wi-Fi, suspend, external displays, webcam, Bluetooth, and battery behavior.
New hardware may need a recent kernel and firmware. Stable workstations may value a long-support release, while recent laptops and development stacks may benefit from a faster distribution cadence.
Choose the interaction model
GNOME, KDE Plasma, Cinnamon, Xfce, and tiling environments provide different workflows and resource profiles. Test multi-monitor scaling, keyboard navigation, accessibility, screen sharing, and notifications rather than selecting from screenshots.
Keep one primary desktop environment on critical machines unless you understand duplicated services and settings. Workflow consistency often matters more than a small memory difference.
Control software sources
Use distribution packages for integrated system software and sandboxed formats for suitable desktop applications. Keep vendor repositories few, signed, and documented. Isolate development dependencies through language environments, containers, or VMs.
Avoid installing unreviewed scripts with administrator privileges. When an application is unavailable, consider a web version, compatible alternative, remote system, or VM before weakening the platform.
Protect data and keep migration reversible
Use full-disk encryption, regular updates, a firewall, screen locking, strong authentication, and protected SSH or cloud credentials. Back up personal data and configuration both locally and off-device. Test restoration.
Migrate in stages with a live USB, spare disk, or defined dual-boot plan. Record repeated workarounds. The best Linux desktop is the one that supports daily work reliably, not the one that demands constant attention.
